The GT Symphony Orchestra will be starting off its second concert of the semester with the Overture to Hänsel und Gretel, which opens with a serene brass chorale and proceeds to weave together various themes from Humperdinck's "fairy-tale opera". This is followed by a performance of Elgar’s Cello Concerto featuring Eric Chen, winner of the 2022 GTSO Concerto Competition. Finally, the orchestra will be playing Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony, a monumental work that is filled with references to the Czech composer’s homeland and is regarded by many critics as the greatest of his nine symphonies.
