Interim Chair, Associate Professor

Jeff Albert is a musician, improviser, and technologist who has been an Associate Professor of Music at Georgia Tech since 2023. He has performed in concerts and festivals in the U.S and throughout Europe, and contributed as a performer, producer, or engineer on over 60 recordings, including the 2017 Grammy winner for Best Traditional Blues Album. He has been named a Rising Star in the DownBeat Critics Poll, and his album Unanimous Sources was named a Top 10 album of 2020 by Jan Garelick in the Boston Globe. In May of 2013, he became the first graduate of the PhD program in Experimental Music and Digital Media at Louisiana State University, where he was a founding member of the Laptop Orchestra of Louisiana (LOLs).

Research Interests

Dr. Albert’s current creative and research practice is focused on creating structures for improvised musical performance through variable form pieces. Recent work has explored formal control by members of the ensemble, computer processes, and interaction between the performer(s) and the computer. He is currently working on interactive musical computer agents and exploring the relationships between performers and processes in the presence of an interactive computer agent.

Teaching Interests

Dr. Albert teaches in the undergraduate Fundamentals of Musicianship sequence, Music Recording and Mixing at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and advises graduate research and undergraduate capstone projects. His other teaching interests include improvisation and interaction, jazz performance, performance paradigms for live computer music, and audio production.
