Program Notes

Lurching Ambush in All Directions (十面埋伏)

This piece was composed at the request of conductor Ting Chaowen, transforming the renowned pipa solo work "Lurking Ambush" into an orchestral version. The original solo have been ingeniously adapted for performance by the full orchestra, presenting significant challenges and divergences in both musical vocabulary and cultural implications. This adaptation not only tests the composer's creativity in musical innovation but also showcases the unique charm of reinterpreting an Eastern classic with Western instruments. In this version, the rich layers and spatial capabilities of the orchestra enhance the original composition's effect of sounds coming from all directions, making the performance more dynamic and impactful.
